MBT Review

The choice of courses, and the order in which they are taken, is not prescribed, however participants are advised to plan their program in consultation with Student Support. Note that from 2006 onwards all new MBT degree participants are required to take at least one of two capstone courses: Strategic Management of Business and Technology, and Management of Innovation and Technical Change.

MBT structure and capstone courses

All MBT participants are required to take at least one of two capstone courses: Strategic Management of Business and Technology and Management of Innovation and Technical Change.

Management of Innovation and Technical Change is offered in Semester 1.

Strategic Management of Business and Technology is offered in Semester 2.

Capstone prerequisites:
· Graduate Certificate (7333) students are not permitted to enrol.
· Graduate Diploma (5457) students must complete at least six courses (36 units of credit) before enrolling.
· Masters (8616) students must complete at least eight courses (48 units of credit) before enrolling.

In order to help participants better plan their choice of courses and the most logical order in which to study them, courses are categorised as 'Business', 'Technology' or 'Integrated' courses.

About the MBT review process

After a significant period of wide consultation and re-examining the aims and outcomes of the MBT Program, the MBT Managment Committee and UNSW Academic board signed off on recommendations for the MBT from 2006.

The changes were part of the first formal review of the Program since it was launched 13 years ago. The review, initiated by the MBT Management Committee looked at the academic integrity, structure and direction of the Program, while maintaining the flexibility desired by MBT's participant cohort of mature and busy professionals.

Input was gathered from discussions held among the Management Committee, Deans of the Australian School of Business and the Faculty of Engineering, academics, participants, alumni and from focus groups and online surveys. MBT Program aims, graduate outcomes and target market needs were then re-articulated.

The whole aim of the formal review was to improve the quality of the Program. There was a wide concern that while the Program provided flexibility of course choice, the many inherent pathways to completion meant that participants could graduate with degrees that appeared to vary widely. Before reassessing the structure MBT decided to re-examine the Program aims, what kind of graduate attributes should be attained, what participants want from the Program, and how best to achieve this.

In line with the outcomes of the review, all MBT courses are continually revised to include the following three key principles:

Principles of individual MBT Courses:

  1. All courses should integrate examples from a range of business and technology environments.
  2. All courses should reflect real-world application of concepts which can be enhanced through class interaction.
  3. All courses should be applicable and use examples relevant across organisational contexts, eg, multinational corporations and small to medium enterprises in both public and private sectors.

TWO CAPSTONE COURSES:

As a result of the MBT curriculum review two capstone courses were been developed, specifically designed to be undertaken towards the end of either the Grad Diploma or Master of Business and Technology. The aim of the capstone courses is to enable graduates to synthesise all their learning across the MBT program, and to achieve a common understanding of the Master of Business and Technology qualification. Both capstone courses assume knowledge of concepts encountered in a number of other MBT courses and the assignments have been designed to apply your learning not only from the capstone course, but also across your MBT program coursework completed to date. It is strongly recommended that if you have not completed at least six MBT courses if you intend to exit the MBT at the Grad Diploma level, or eight courses if you are working towards the Masters, you should defer enrolment in either capstone course until a later stage of your degree.
